Bamboo is at the very heart of Lotties Eco, and you will find us singing its praises at every opportunity. With less environmental impact than many materials and remarkable properties, we hope you’ll fall in love with it too.
Our bamboo is made up of 95% organic bamboo viscose, and 5% elastane, giving it that perfect stretch and recovery for a long wearing piece. Bamboo is a type of grass; it's stalks grow about 12 inches a day and produce 35% more oxygen than the average tree. They have a deep routed system which helps soil erosion so when the canes are cut, it grows back quickly, no dig growing if you will. Most gardeners know how it can become overgrown quickly if bamboo garden varieties are not kept under control. This makes it a natural, renewable source. The growing process has a far lesser impact than cotton, using 20 times less water to grow. Having said that drip irrigation on organic cotton is great too, I think the future is in wearing a variety of natural and recycled materials and manufactured in a responsible way. And most importantly, clothing is loved repeatedly for many years, respect the artistry in clothing, don't throw it in the bin or not get your 50+ wears out of it.
Bamboo also has a much higher yield; one acre of bamboo yields 10 times more than cotton. The stalks are processed into fibres, which are then spun into yarns and woven into the fabric, which makes its way to our studio.
We are constantly amazed by the properties of bamboo, and love to let you in on its secrets. Its breathability helps to regulate your body temperature, leaving you feeling fresher for longer. This in turn encourages less washing, great for the environment and your busy schedule! Bamboo also holds colour very well, which means dark colours won't fade like other materials over time with wash and wear as easily.
Bamboo is also known to have anti-bacterial qualities, making it a real treat for your skin. Many customers love how soft the fabric is and are impressed with how it remains so throughout the wear and tear of daily life. The strong fibres combined with elastane allows for a controlled stretch which moves in sync with your body, from fitness to leisure.
The bamboo we sew with is bamboo viscose, manufacturer with the closed loop process. Closed loop means any harmful by-products are kept within the factory to be treated and reused where possible. The main fear around viscose are by-products being let into rivers. China is fast becoming a market leader in cleaner ways and we use an ethical market leader to produce our organic fabric.
Please note that like all materials, there is a small chance you may be allergic to wood pulp. If your skin feels itchy or irritated, discontinue wearing.
Our story
We started sewing with bamboo in 2015 and we haven't looked back. It's the most wonderfully soft fabric to sew, we love it and we're so glad our customers love wearing our pieces again and again.
We're a family owned small business, passionate about sewing, so we sew all our pieces from start to finish with our small team of talented people right here in the Worcestershire countryside.
"We can make anything from bamboo, I used to go round saying. I'm a lingerie designer so I started making knickers and now we make vicars tops as well. So yes, now we make knickers and things for vicars"
Love,
